“The world will be saved and remade by the dreamers.” ― Sarah J. Maas, Empire of Storms

How am I supposed to function now?

And so I cross the finish line of the "Throne of Glass" books, well at least I have caught up with them. It took me around five days to read "Empire of Storms" which is book 5 in the "Throne of Glass" series by Sarah J. Maas and as I finished it last night...well let's just say it was an effort not to scream and throw the book clear across my bedroom. Now I won't spoil it, but the last ten chapters are basically a literary earthquake. Book 5 for me is my second favourite. The were equal amounts of violence, romance, friendship, and plot twists that kept me on my toes for most of the book.

Book 5 is the culmination of all the other books so far. There are multiple journeys throughout the other novels that all converge into one in book 5 and I loved it. The temporary separation of characters was very smart. These were different combinations from the previous novels so we got to see how different characters got to interact with another and form their bonds. I wasn't really expecting the ending or the surprises and it makes me so happy that I have avoided all of the spoilers throughout the series! Yes! *High Fives self*.

There is so much that I want to talk about, but I don't want to spoil it! Arg. I found that book 5 was the most expansive. A lot of the world is explored as well as the character's abilities and their relationships. I think that there is so much more to learn about them all and I am so grateful that we still have two more books to look forward to. I think that if this had been the final book, I would have been devastated!

Maas has focused more on the history of Erilea in book 5 as we learn the stories from the past and how everything has come together to create the current storyline. I couldn't get enough of all the history! I will say this, if you haven't read "The Assassin's Blade", you need to! Read it before EOS and "Queen of Shadows" or a lot won't make sense!

Also like the previous 4 novels, there are different perspectives, but I really enjoyed them! I thought they were well written and I never felt annoyed that they were changing often. Throughout the novel readers will see more of the cruelty that is evident in Erilea. Of course, we have glimpsed the very prominent darkness that has fallen, but hearing and seeing the more intimate cruelties is sometimes very difficult to read, but also very important.

So many emotions flowed through me as I read these six books (The original 5 plus the novella). I was happy, sad, angry, heartbroken, elated, disappointed, confused, shocked, and overall anxious. The last 100 pages of each book got my heart racing and that is just proof enough that these are some of the best novels I have ever read. Maas has a gift of extracting emotional responses from readers and I commend her on that immensely.

I would say that book five is solely about sacrifice in many different forms. All of the characters: Aelin, Aedion, Rowan, Lysandra, etc. all have to give up one thing or another to protect one another and there so much honor in it all that makes me so happy. Characters are so important in creating worlds and this is one of the best "cast" of characters I have ever read. It makes me so excited for the TV show!

I wish I could say more, but I really can't spoil it! This series is so worth the read and even if you didn't like "Throne of Glass" then please give the rest of the novels a shot because they are brilliant. I of course give this book 5/5 stars and cannot wait for the Chaol Westfall novel to come out in September and the final installment next year! If you are a fan of the "A Court of Thorns and Roses" series by Maas or "The Mortal Instruments" by Cassandra Clare, then I am almost certain you will love "Throne of Glass". I am off to re-read ACOTAR and ACOMAF in preparation of ACOWAR!

Happy Reading!
