“In Croswald, the only thing more powerful than dark magic is one secret…” - D.E. Night, The Crowns of Croswald

I JUST LOVE BOOKS.

Especially when said books remind me so much of my childhood love of reading. The lovely author of The Crowns of Croswald, D.E. Night along with her team was nice enough to send me her amazing novel along with a box of magical gifts. The first thing I noticed about the novel was how utterly gorgeous everything related to it was. The cover, the font, the WEBSITE. All of it is a magical surprise that is everything you want when reading a fantasy novel. The synopsis is as followed:

FROM GOODREADS: For sixteen years Ivy Lovely has been hidden behind an enchanted boundary that separates the mundane from the magical. When Ivy crosses the border, her powers awaken. Curiosity leads her crashing through a series of adventures at the Halls of Ivy, a school where students learn to master their magical blood and the power of Croswald’s mysterious gems. When Ivy’s magic––and her life––is threatened by the Dark Queen, she scrambles to unearth her history and save Croswald before the truth is swept away forever.

What I liked most about this book was the pace of it. There wasn't any unnecessary filler chapters or run-on conversations that tend to bulk up books for no reason. The story kept going and took you away in a whirl of glittering magic and extraordinary worlds.

As for Ivy, I think she is a well developed character. There is an underlying strength to her alongside the obvious physical and magical strength. I can see her character going further and becoming a very complex heroine. But when it comes to favourite characters, I am going to go with Fyn. We don't know much about Fyn right now and I think that is why I love him so much. I feel as if he is hiding something major and I have my theories, but I'll keep those to myself for now. I just really hope there is a sequel!

When you think of magic, a lot of series come to mind along with stereotypes in which that magic can be used. However, in The Crowns of Croswald, not only is the magic unique, but the way it is produced and channeled is something I haven't read before. Especially when it comes to the Scrivenists who can wield magic using quills...uh yes please! The whole idea that knowledge and writing creates magic is so cool to me.

Night not only creates amazing magic and interesting characters, but the world of Croswald itself is a thing of beauty. Everything is detailed from light sources to travel. Nothing is as it seems and everything will leave you in awe. Even the simplest ideas are so intricately described and create the most stunning visuals as you read. I think that if you enjoy endless adventure then this book is the one for you.  I think the best part about fiction these days is that it transports the reader into a new world and that is definitely true with this novel. I mean, I'm just saying, if I could live in Croswald, I would. Everything is so different and quirky and I JUST LOVE IT.

At times, I did find some of the dialogue to be a bit tongue and cheek, but overall I think it works well in the story. I think it was smart that the reader figured out the mysteries along with Ivy. I never like when we know what is going on but the main character doesn't. It's just a bit frustrating, but in this novel, we got to go on the journey with her and experience this new magical world together.

There are so many aspects that surprised me as I was reading this book, but you will have to try and guess what those were when you read it yourself! No spoilers! I can promise you this though: there are things in this novel that you have never seen before and that is what makes it so magical.

As I read, I found myself smiling and giggling like a child again as it reminded me of the books I read when I was younger. Not in the sense of juvenile writing because I think the writing is brilliant, but in the sense that it reminded me of the first time I read a fantasy novel and how it transported me. It was like when I first read Harry Potter for the first time and I love that.

Overall I give this book 4/5 stars. If you are a fan of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, or even The Chronicles of Narnia you will love this book! Give it a chance and enter the magical world of Croswald! There are many secrets to be discovered and plot twists to be read!

The Crowns of Croswald by D.E. Night comes out July 21st! Pre-order now!

Happy Reading!
