August Thoughts: 2017

August 31, 2017

“The month of August had turned into a griddle where the days just lay there and sizzled.” ― Sue Monk Kidd, The Secret Life of Bees

Eight months down, four to go...

Then again, it doesn't really work like that, does it? The year is a never ending loop of promised days and useless Holidays. It's all wrapped up in a twelve month bow with the occasional leap year sticker on the side. Sometimes, I wonder why we even bother with a calendar, but that is a whole other conversation. This month was rather uneventful, no shocker there, right? I didn't think so. However, I did enjoy a few things. Mostly television shows, but I don't see how that is a problem. If you ask my family they may say I spend too much time on Netflix, but the way I see it: If you're paying for, you should use it.

The number one show that I started watching this month, well more like three days ago is Riverdale. I had seen all the promo for the new CW show a while back before it aired and was never interested in it, but I decided to give it a try. Riverdale is one of the best produced and written shows I have watched in a long time. It the right amount of insanity and darkness and provided an incredible watching experience. The series is based on Archie Comics and features everyone from Archie Andrews himself to my personal favourite: Jughead Jones. His cynical attitude and his love for writing and telling stories really made me like him. All of the characters are so complex and have amazing arcs. Season two premieres in October, so go binge season 1 before then.

When it comes to the world I think we can all agree that whatever or whoever (whatever you believe) runs the universe is screwing with us. Everytime I turn on the news there is some new disaster at work and I am so tired of it. The aftermath of Hurricane Harvey breaks my heart. It's as if we can never catch a break.

August is one of my least favourite months. I hate summer. I do not like the heat and anytime I walk outside I wish I were back in the cool and overcast landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. The heat just makes everything uncomfortable and well I may write up another post about my aversion to hot weather, but I doubt you would find that interesting.

As for my writing, well it has....taken a turn. I think I am being over ambitious. As a writer, you need to find your individual voice and style and I think I was trying to be like so many other writers and that has now stopped. I have my characters and my plot and hopefully this fall, I will finish. The story is pretty dark so perhaps the darker mornings and colder weather will inspire me some.

Sometimes I think of August as the end of the year. I'm pretty sure that comes from childhood. End of summer equals start of school year. As a kid you associate September with a new year instead of January, at least I did. Autumn always feels more renewing than New Years. The weather changes, people's moods change, and there is this vibe in the air as people put away the beach balls and haul out fake autumnal decorations in hopes of feeling something new. It's back to work, back to school, and back to pretending we are all in a cheesy hallmark film with fall festivals and pumpkin spice overdoses. Personally, I love it. I love how one day from August 31st to September 1st can change a whole town.

It always reminds me of those whiteboard calendars we had in kindergarten. August would have suns and beach umbrellas along the top and the second it switched to September, the leaves would replace the suns and everything would feel different. I wish that carried on after Kindergarten. That we could replace a laminated calendar full of sunshine to one of leaves and we could be new people.

Well, as the kids go back to school, the leaves change, and the Hogwart's Express departs the station, autumn falls upon us and August is in the past. I hope these next four months offer an appropriate end to your 2017. I personally hope mine are filled with cold weather and warm food!

Goodbye August, Hello September.
